Three down, just one more to go ... trying to redeem my bleak prospects w/a good showing on Wednesday in Crim coz I most certainly bombed contracts today. Ah, alhamdullilah - at least it was painless!

I have exactly 47 hours to know Crim backwards, forwards and inside out ... whether I actually achieve my goal, well only time will tell. tick tock tick tock ....

what would you attempt to do, if you knew you could not fail?

"we cannot protect our borders if we do not protect our ideals." - Sen. Ed Kennedy

Alot happened today - the most significant I think was that today the senate voted against the reauthorization of the 16 provisions of the Patriot Act that are scheduled to expire on Dec. 31. WAHOOWA! The system is finally redeeming itself - the checks and balances are coming into play, first the judicial wipe out last week (or was it the week before) in Tampa, and now the Senate is getting into the action.

Supporters of Patriot Act Suffer a Stinging Defeat in Senate
With barely a week left before Congress "goes on winter break", the next couple of days are gonna be very interesting.

Another interesting turn of events was the news of presidential authorization of a unwarranted, secret domestic spying after Sept. 11, 2001. NY Times.

I noticed that most of my posts over the last couple of weeks have been politically motivated. Hm, maybe I'm taking this soap box thing a little too far ... but in my defense, there's been alot of politcally and legally significant activity that has really caught my attention. And honestly, apart from exams (two down btw, and oh what drama!), there's really not alot happening in my life!

So, my apologies to my friends who aren't quite as enamored by this stuff as I am ... just bear w/me a little more and I promise, I'll get back to pointless blogging. Oh, I've found some REALLY awesome sites that I'm gonna link to the blog ... yes, only I would get excited about this. Just call me a Dweeb.

More absurdities ...

Ok, so in relation to my last post about signing the petition to fillibuster the Patriot Act AND more importantly the legal developments that delivered a well placed blow to the knees of the Patriot Act (see this post) -the NY TIMES reported the the house succesfully voted for renewal of 14 of the provisions. However they anticipate a problem w/the Senate ... (so sign the petition now!)
here are some quotes from the Times article

"President Bush urged the Senate to pass the measure quickly. "The Patriot Act is essential to fighting the war on terror and preventing our enemies from striking America again," he said. "We cannot afford to be without this law for a single moment.""

"Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, the Republican majority leader, was talking with White House officials about a one-year extension of the current law without any changes as a way around the threat of a filibuster, The Associated Press reported.

The prospects of a delay alarmed some lawmakers. "Renewing the Patriot Act before it expires in December is literally a matter of life and death," said Representative Ric Keller, Republican of Florida."

um, essential to fighting the war on terror? a matter of life and death? - I don't think so - and Dr. Sami's case is a prime example. For two years this case has been the poster child for the oh so wonderful Patriot Act (granted they've been working for a decade in preparing this case, but the Patriot Act allowed them to use the evidence in court) -- five months and 30 million dollars later -- where are they? Absolutely nowhere - the prosecution couldn't convince a Tampa jury (a jurisdiction where 87% of citizens polled believed the Dr. Sami would be convicted) that their evidence, painstakingly collected (including what - 20,000 hours of phone conversations, plethoras of fax transmissions, and what not) was enough to convict!

"Al-Arian's indictment in 2003 was hailed by the government as a triumph of the Patriot Act, which allowed secret wiretaps and other intelligence collected over nine years to be used to charge Al-Arian and others with supporting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Before the law, it was more difficult for prosecutors to access information gathered by intelligence agents." - ABC news online, 12/7/05

Matter of life and death - yeah, because while they're holing up University Professors for their constitutionally protected beliefs under an arbitrary peice of legislation, and spending 30 million dollars on their trial, the real dangers are out still out there ...

Gathering intelligence is one thing, and then gathering CREDIBLE, and VALID evidence that actually proves something more than one man's beliefs is a whole different ballgame. Lets just remember that we're all entitled to the protections of the constitution - freedom of speech and all that jazz.

So basically, give it up - amend the provisions so that we're not advocating the knee jerk reaction. Remember the Japanese internment camps - rounded up all the Japanese folk after Pearl Harbor --- knee jerk reactions have no credibility. I understand that people are concerned about terrorism, but honestly, the violaton of individuals civil right is NOT where you start.

How about we start w/liberty and justice for all? And I don't mean just for those that have the great benefits of the super tax cuts ...

STOP THE PATRIOT ACT!

PLEASE POST ON YOUR BLOGS; PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AND FORWARD THIS AROUND!

I was under the impression that it was too late - but apparently it hasn't gone to vote yet. its worth a shot, right? what's that saying - its not over until the fat lady sings?

The White House is pressuring Congress to reauthorize a new version of thePatriot Act that is worse than the original law and doesn't include needed reforms. This could come before the Senate as soon as Thursday.A bipartisan group of senators have agreed to fight the Patriot Act ?byfilibuster if necessary. This is a huge moment. Senators from both parties are standing together to protect freedom and liberty -- and they're ready to fight.

Can you signthis petition to show them and the rest of the Senate that you support filibustering this bad bill?

The Patriot Act has to be stopped until it includes reforms.

Thanks!

inspiration ...

we're all inspired by different things, we're all comforted by different things ... and we all do things for different reasons.

I'm prepping for my first law school exam - or rather I should say that I was prepping for it. I haven't really done anything at all for the last four hours. My main focus has been just keeping sane, and not getting caught up in the madness ... Lang's words of wisedom - not freaking out is half the battle. So far so good ... I guess.

I did my routine blog check, the law school blogs, friends blogs ... and I just read a post by a friend that I'd like to share excerpts of ...

" I see everyone around me cramming.I ponder the reason behind the madness.I realize the madness is useless. Pointless. Ridiculous.Stress is motivation for some. Destruction for others.Finals, exams, papers, projects. Arbitrary. It’s not about how to score well, what to study, when to take a break or how long to violently sift through page after page of dense information. It’s about why. I have to remind myself that it’s about why."

"The heart is the keeper of truth. The mind is a temporary tool of analysis. The heart is knowledge.I realize that the stress of finals is the rooted in limits of the mind.No single mind can hold masses of such information if it is not taken to heart. No mass of information can truly enter the heart unless it is willed by Allah. Allah wills for his believers that which is beneficial for them and with pure intention."

[quoted from anonymous friend's blog]

Brings it all back to intentions. Why am I here - why am I studying law? I'm reminded of what changed my heart and inspired me to apply ... I read about it everyday - not neccessarily in my casebooks, but in the newspaper ... all the time - constant reminders of why I'm here. I remembered my intentions, and then forgot - and now I'm reminded again. So, anonymous friend ... thank you.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. -Albert Schweitzer.

Good luck on finals kids. Remember the why, not the what ... and we'll all be ok.

a snow prompted post ...

its snowing! my first real Pittsburgh snowfall - sucks that I'm cooped up studying though! Stepped out for a few minutes to check it out ... oddly enough, I always forget how awesome the first snowfall can be ... the temperature's perfect, the soft flakes are falling fast and coating the ground w/a clean layer of white-ness. The timing couldn't be worse, but I have to say its nice to look out the window and watch the snow fall ... its kinda relaxing!

The snow prompted me to think about taking pictures, but my camera's not at hand - and anyhoo, I'm thinking more about taking real pictures. I've been thinking alot about reverting back to film for a while - unfortunately, I can't afford that right now! Its really weird - but all day I've had photography on my mind ... I was listening to an interview w/a photographer this morning as I was getting prepped for the day, in the library there was an entire display of books on photography, the NY times is talking alot about the latest generation of digital cameras, and now the snow has prompted me to think about it again ...

Well, in two weeks I'll have alot of time to think about it! Right now I need to think about Pennoyer, Asahi, Gasperini and oh yeah, Erie!!!!!

BTW - AM SO EXCITED ABOUT BREAK!!!!!!!!!! ok, back to work.

There is some justice left ...

I haven't really posted much about the trial of Dr. Sami Al-Arian in Tampa, Fl., but recent events have prompted me to do so!

Dr. Sami was arrested almost two years ago on allegations of supporting terrorism among other things. For anyone following the controversey over the USA Patriot act, this case was considered the "key court test" of the Patriot Act. Over the last several months, the prosecution presented their case against Dr. Sami -built on largely circumstantial evidence collected under the auspices of the USA Patriot ACT and the government's expanded 'search and surveillence' powers. The prosecution presented for nearly FIVE MONTHS.

And how did the defense respond to the prosecutions nearly five months of presentation of its case, including testimony from nearly 80 witnesses? The Al Arian defense was five words

"On behalf of Dr. Al-Arian, the defense rests."

[personal note - I was a little shocked, but it makes sense - if there is no case, there's nothing to defend!]

Yesterday, the jury came back with its verdict - Dr. Al-Arian was acquitted of 8 of 17 charges, with the jury remaining deadlocked on the remaning charges!!! One commentator put it best - Courtroom defeats for prosecutors don’t come much more embarrassing than the one suffered Tuesday!

Now, you'd think that this would make for breaking news ... I mean, this was a huge case right? To put it into perspective - on Feb 20, 2003 - then attorney-general John Ashcroft personally announced the indictment, in a press conference carried live on CNN, followed up by ABC, NBC and CBS giving the story substantial airtime. The trial is rumored to have cost 30 million dollars.
Huge. Newsworthy - at least you'd think.

Well, guess what - none of networks reported the acquittal at all. yeah, I know - SHOCKER. Although it was on the NY Times website earlier today, and CNN had a short story on it too -- its all but disappeared in the black hole of non-consequential news. I don't know, but a 30 million dollar trial that was the mainstay of one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in recent history seems pretty consequential to me. But thats just me.

So, since not alot of people generally follow these types of issues, and don't neccessarily go looking for the information - I decided to give it a little attention. If you're interested ... and want to read more about the trial, Dr. Sami's recent acquittal CLICK HERE ; or here

When I get my act together and fix this blog, I'll have more links up.

SIDE BAR IS BACK!

I FIGURED IT OUT!

The hyperlinks in "You're kidding me ..." messed me up.

An Ali Mohammed tradition lives on

Over the summer I was all about documenting the queintessential Bangaloreans - and I missed out on the most important one. So, mom - this posts for you.

Every year, the Bazm (a social welfare-type NG organization that mom's active in) hosts a bazaar in Bangalore where they raise money for the programs that they run - notably the education scholarship program (scholarships for girls pursuing professional careers) and the working women/elderly women hostels that they maintain (they do alot more, check out the website).

This bazaar is a big deal - Bangaloreans flock to it because its the one time of year that you can be sure to get all the goodies. In true Ali Mohammed tradition, OP's pulls out all the stops and provides pies galore, and I think burgers and stuff, and of couse Mom brings out the biryani, chocolate cake and grape juice. Mom just sent me an email about it, and I felt the need to share ...

"It had rained the night before, there is a depression in the bay, so the grounds were quite wet and messy. But!!!!!the bazaar lovers who wait the whole year came out in droves, mess or no mess and the line for the Biryaniwas a snake. My cakes especially the German Chocolate was a hit. I sold 72cupcakes, 17 loaf cakes(pound cake) and 4 trys of Chocolate cake.Plus 100glasses of grape juice! all in 4 hours. But cooked for 3 days!!!!!!!!!! well hoping to make points up there!"

This bazaar is usually the talk of the town! My friends (and their parents!) have been known to show up with large containers to gather up all the biryani they can possibly get! I want to say that amma used to be the biryani-chocolate cake toting Ali Mohammed (correct me if I'm wrong mom) at these to-dos ... but mom's taken over now, and is doing a great job of keeping the tradition going.

mmm, biryani. mmmmmm, cake.

Pennies...

Did you ever hear about the guy that backed up traffic on the turnpike because he paid the $7 toll entirely in pennies?

He held up traffic for 20 minutes while the toll-booth operator called for "backup"

And then ...

he did it AGAIN at the next toll booth.

** Msg for Aly-oop: this reminds me of the night after the bball game when Dr. J got stuck at the toll booth coz she didn't have change, and we had to reverse all the way back off the exit ramp!!!! Aaaah! Fun times ...

Mason/Hoya ballers - up for a pick up game over break?!

“Golly gee, its cold – with a capital K!” – Weather Channel anchor, circa winter 2004.

The ‘burgh is definitely cold. Today its about 34 degrees, but with the wind chill its more like 20!! Wow, Mo wasn’t kidding when he said the wind chill was killer!

So, I wrapped up warm today – especially since I know its going to be exponentially colder when the sun goes down. I get on the bus, with my backpack, laptop bag, bag of study aids (i.e. food), wearing my MASSIVE jacket, and three visible layers underneath. I bet I looked pretty stupid! Actually, from the stares I got from all the undergrads on the bus – I know I looked pretty stupid. It was hilarious though – coz they were all wearing their cool fleeces, maybe a pea-coat (is that how you spell it!?), Pitt sweatshirts, etc – and here I am lookin’ like I’m an Eskimo (thank GOD I don’t have a hood!).

Of course I ignored them because I knew that I was REALLY REALLY REALLY WARM and thats a heck of alot better than bein' cold.

On another note, I realized this week how absolutely dependent I am on my cell phone. Its pathetic. I barely got through three days without it and succumbed to getting a new phone, and renewing my contract with Sprint. Its not as bad a deal as I make it out to be coz alot of people are on Sprint in the 'burgh, and in the district (free PCS-PCS calls) - and the reception is pretty decent here.

And finally, the most random part of this post - my coffee tastes like paan!!!!

Note: paan - betel leaf (usually sold stuffed with nuts and condiments as an appetizer).

WOW!

On my usual waste-ing of time blog-surfing, I came across somethign REALLY REALLY REALLY COOL!

http://www.poiemadesign.com/wwi/

Color photos from WWI :-)

Also, discovered that one of my oh-so-cool 2L friends is an AMAZING photographer, that works mainly w/B&W! Ah, the little things that make me happy! Can't wait to play w/pictures over break. We're at ... um, since my phone is dead I don't have an accurate count down ... but approximately 20 days until break; which means 11 days to finals.

I think I just slipped off my high.
