a fan

Since I handed in my write on competition on Tuesday - I have been free. The weight that was lifted off my shoulders was indescribable - I had a smile on my face for hours after. Of course then I had to run home to pack and catch my flight to see the fam.

In a whirlwind four days I crossed six states (some very briefly, but crossed them nonetheless) and the District - meeting friends new and old. Hectic, but I'm beginning to accept that this is how it goes. However, in that time I began learning about a person that I've always had a deep admiration for, and about whom a question has lingered for years - John F. Kennedy. JFK has ranked up there with my top U.S. Presidents - Lincoln, JFK and Clinton - all for very different reasons that will undoubtably be discussed at some point or another.

His death was shrouded in mystery, and until now I knew little of his short Presidency, but even less about his life. So, I picked up "An Unfinished Life" from the library before I set off on my multi-state travels, hoping to get into it and learn more about a man that I have admired from afar. 67-pages in, and I think I'm getting somewhere.

Some of what I've learned in the few pages that I've read have made me doubt my admiration for him, but I've only begun to scratch the surface. Of course biographies are meant to glorify their subjects, but I think that Robert Dallek has done a good job of showing us the man behind the image.

So far - here's what I think:

He was a thinker, an observer - and very intelligent. He was compassionate, and well-liked by many - polite and considerate (for the most part). He was aware of his surroundings, absorbed everything around him - and had fantastic fore-sight. I have to wonder - and this is a question that I have asked myself many times in the past - what would this country have been like if JFK had lived? Would Vietnam have become the war that it did if JFK had served two terms? Was the cold war inevitable - or could masterful dipolomacy have saved years wasted?

Would the world be the same if JFK had lived? Of course this is a question that one could ask about many greats that died pre-maturely - Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X ...

Of course, at the end of the day - everyone has a purpose, and our destiny is predetermined - and while I remain intrigued with the big question of who killed JFK - I am more intrigued with what could have been had they failed. This narration from An Unfinished Life is what makes me wonder, all the more, what could have been -

"More than anything, Jack's travels encouraged an intellectual's skepticism about the limits of human understanding and beliefs. When he returned to America in September, he asked a Catholic Priest: "I saw the rock where our Lord ascended into Heaven in a cloud, and [in] the same area, I saw the place where Mohammed was carried up to Heaven on a white horse, and Mohammed has a big following and Christ has a big following, and why do you think we should believe Christ any more that Mohammed?""
---- ROBERT DALLEK, An Unfinished Life, p. 59

Dorky law-skoolers ...

Pittsburgh just hosted it's first Asian American Film Festival (May 12-20, 2006 - Silk Screen Festival) - so Pat and I decided to go support the efforts! [an aside - check out the trailer - its AWESOME!]

As the announcer was making the introduction to the film, and thanking the sponsors -

Announcer guy: "... and we'd like to thank Lexus, one of our main sponsors for the festival"

Pat and I turn to each other, rather perplexed: "Lexis?" [read - in terms of Lexis Nexis]

After a second, we both realize what law school had done to us. Just call us dorks.

losing sight of the big picture ...

I've been working on this write-on competition since finals ended - almost two weeks ago. I think I'm losing sight of it - actually, I've lost sight of it. Its a really interesting topic - I actually wish that I could do more extensive research because I know that this could be a more coherent paper if I had that option. But unfortunately, no - I am limited to the 303 pages that they've given me. It is infinitely frustrating - its hard to motivate yourself when you know you're done (with finals), but you have ONE more little thing to do in order to say that you did everything you had to do, and that you gave it your best. Although, I know that this is not my best work - so I can't honestly say that I gave it my best.

Ah - the mindless ramble.

38 hours to go.

Someone shine a light at the end of the tunnel so I can see it!

[Author's edit: It's official - my write on submission is a tirade targetted at all the freaks of the world. Now, if only it were coherent.]

Writing on ... and updatin' ya'll

Apologies for the extended absence from the blogosphere. Things are a little crazy in Z's world right now - the rents are in the country, I'm jumping from city to city and attempting to balance this write on as I do so. I wish I had a visual to put up here! :-) But you guys can probably form a pretty good picture in your minds!

Whats been up? Well, finals were done last Monday (almost two weeks past) and for a couple of days I just kinda chilled - hung out w/the law school buddies, went out for a movie (MI:3), blah blah ... drove down to Philly on Friday (w/Ms. Jones), had a whirlwind lunch w/my two favorite Philly-ites - Aly and SJShafi, just about made it to the train (slid into the car, in fact) - and headed to the District. Upon arrival, shot over to Mo and Bhabi's apartment, just in time to give mom a big hug, and shower before the rest of the khandan arrived - for a scrumptious meal, crossing a few continents.

Saturday was a glorious day - absolutely beautiful weather - I woke up early (shocking) got some work done before heading to meet Lang for brunch at Kramer Books (which is still awesome!) - as usual, chillin' w/Lang was fantastic. I was really lucky to have made some really great friends while at K&S - goes to show - everything does happen for a reason, Alhamdullilah! Scooted over to Pentagon city for a hair cut and quickly stuck my head in a few stores, before having to shoot back over to the apartment. Dinner was at Shamshiry (still the awesome-est place in town!) w/the fam - always good times!

Sunday was graduation day - rising bright and early, we headed off to the arena - sat through some pretty good speeches (this is graduation #7 - at least - and I must say the speeches were more memorable than some in the past!). Reception (mm great cake!) and headed out to Bethesda for some more family fun! Got to catch up with some of the folks that I've been missing over the past 9 months in a more relaxed atmosphere than in the past.

All in all a crazy, but fun time - sadly I didn't get to see people that I wanted to see - UVa crew, DC-muslimah, etc. :-(. Please forgive me guys!

Anyhoo, I have returned to the 'burgh (on Tuesday) to complete this write on competition - and to attend orientation activities downtown for my summer job. Productivity is at an all time low uuurgggh.

So why, pray tell, have I been MIA from the blogosphere? Well, I've been spending my time wisely ... no, I haven't actually been focusing on the write on competitions - sheesh, me - productive?! Are you on crack? No no no, I have been working on a little project over the last few days - that I'm VERY excited about. I don't plan on revealing my little secret until the appropriate time - so, watch this space - soon, inshaAllah - all will be revealed.

An Inconvenient Truth

I've seen the trailer twice - and both times, it has scared the living daylights out of me. This is actually happening. Is it hype? I don't think so - I think this is the real deal.

We need to forget all the piddly issues that are being fought over every day, and focus on this. It doesn't matter what you believe, or how you align yourself religiously, socially or politically - it doesn't matter where you come from - the U.S., India, the Middle East, China - we can all base our common humanity on the fact that we have been blessed with this earth. The earth that has been the source of our sustenance and our protection from the harsh elements in the universe. If nothing else, we can all join together - forget our petty differences, humble ourselves and realize that there is something more important than ourselves - and that is the very existence of our world.

As I sit here with my laptop on my knees - draining precious energy from the scarce resources that we have (in the grand scheme), and wonder if there is anything that we can do. Is it too little too late? Is it ever too late to try?

Regardless of whether your status is "treehugger and green peace activist" or staunch believer that ___ companies (fill in oil, timber/logging, or the money hungry industry of your choice) are trustworthy and well-intentioned ... or if you're like me - stuck in between, just trying to figure out where you stand - whether there is a middle ground ... watch this film. And tell your friends.

The Inconvenient Truth opens May 24 - pledge to see it opening weekend.

Stick a fork in me - I'm DONE!

Oh, whatever am I going to do - three months without having to read for class everyday, three months without having to endure class at 8.45am (!!), and potentially not seeing the inside of the library that I have made my home over the last 6 weeks!

WELL - I have a couple of ideas about what I will do with all that time! :-)

- inshaAllah I'll be workin' in the 'burgh from May 30 - July 21.
- in and out of DC until May 29, and periodically after that
- Houston, TX - July 1-4
- DC/VA after July 21 inshaAllah!

HOWEVER, before any of the real vacationing can begin - I must get to work on the write-on competition. *sigh.

I've got lots of thoughts and stories from the exam period - will share soon!

A big big BIG shout out to those that kept me sane over the last 8 months, and particularly in the last 8 weeks.
